Revenue growth did not protect restaurant profit
The UK's top 100 restaurant groups increased combined turnover from £12.9 billion to £13.3 billion while combined profit fell from £365 million to £204 million, a 44% decline.
The figures were reported by MCA and covered by QSR Media. Reported pressures included minimum wage increases, employer National Insurance, business rates, food and energy inflation, and volatile commodity costs.
The headline matters because it exposes a problem restaurant operators already feel: revenue can grow while profit disappears.
What the figures do and do not prove
The figures show sector-wide pressure. They do not show that every restaurant group lost profit for the same reason, and they do not prove that an operating platform could have prevented the full decline.
Wages, taxes, rates, energy prices, and commodity inflation are largely external. Restaurant teams cannot remove them through better dashboards or faster alerts.
They can still improve how quickly they identify and respond to the operational effects of those pressures.

Each issue can appear in a report. The harder part is turning the evidence into accountable action while the margin is still recoverable.

- Can the team prove what changed after the action?
These questions move the discussion from general cost pressure to operational evidence.
